I, on the other hand, hated being forced to take supplementary lessons I did not need. After a succession of tutors who quit – one of whom pinched me – I realised that my mother was going to continue forcing tuition down my throat. I eventually settled on the one I thought was the nicest.
In my opinion, the greatest gifts that parents can give their children include a curiosity of the world, a joy for life, a desire for learning and a heart for other people. Good luck!
Speeding ahead – With my tutor, we went through the lessons which would be later covered in school. Initially, there was the novelty of already knowing everything that the teacher was going to say. With time – the thrill gone, I gave myself permission to zone out/shut down/daydream during class itself.
I believed her. I loved reading. Yet, in my naive mind, I thought everything that was outside of my school textbooks was frivolous. Advice:
Does my child have time to cultivate their own, true interests? It seems like common sense, but many children never learn to discern what they really want from what others (including their parents or peer group) want. Each child will have their own hobbies, pastimes and pursuits. Allocate opportunities for your child to be nurtured in the way they choose; it could be time to read,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or by attending some form of enrichment lessons, from chess,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ballet, sport, to piano and the like. Don’t lie to your children to get them to do what you want them to do. Being manipulative will only come back and bite you in the end.
Extra homework – Having been told repeatedly that I was ‘bad’ for not doing my tuition assignments, I brought them to school and had to do them during recess. There was simply too much – besides attending classes, doing my school homework,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], extra-curricular activities and tuition assignments.
Parents, rather than follow what your relatives, friends,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and neighbours do, blindly, ask yourself the following questions:
I didn’t want tuition. I didn’t even need tuition.
Same old stuff – I was made to rehash the same materials already covered in school. It was as if there was a belief that reiteration would, by some miracle, make sure I would reproduce the textbook word for word during examinations.
This did not reduce my continued distaste for tuition through the years.

It wasn’t until much later that I realised that the world does not revolve around textbooks. There was much – in fact a whole lot – that one textbook could not possibly cover. It was the dawn of a new era for me.

You have to have a continued existence towards success for your business. Imagine that nothing negative affected you. In fact, you would even take that experience and apply the lesson learned toward your business to gain from it. That is persistence.
You see, persistence is the ability to keep going. It insures that obstacles will not keep you down. Persistence is what will pick you back up when you fall. When failures occur (which they will) they won't deter you from achieving the objective, from accomplishing your goals.

He goes on to state that there are four necessary steps to develop persistence: 1) A Definite Purpose, 2) A Definite Plan, 3) A Strong Mind, 4) A Friendly Alliance.

Everyone feels like that every now and then, but you have to resist the temptation to get caught up in that. There is a difference between those who get past that and those who don't.

Am I insisting to learn from this or am I just getting discouraged? If you are not overcoming or not learning, work on developing your persistence so you can make your business successful. Yes, today's youth are facing an uncertain future, as the largest and most powerful generation in the world, the baby boomers, will be retiring. And yes, there are organizations that support and recognize the youth who will become our future leaders. There are also some amazing young people who get inspired by a cause and commit their time, and their piggy bank to do what many adults don't even think of doing. The question is, will enough of our youth be ready and prepared to take on the challenges their generation faces? Today, it seems all too common that young people have very little appreciation for the concept of “work ethic”. The implications of this as it relates to the near crisis financial statistics in North America are huge.
Personal debt levels are at record highs and savings rates at record lows. The way out of this mess is not to cut back spending and save more money. The answer is to learn how to earn more money and to re-ignite the entrepreneurial spirit in young people like it has been for people in overseas countries - namely China and India.
Their expectations are so high they become impatient or don't even see the value in what they're doing or learning at the time. Their respect for work and for training is negligible.
There are also the poor employers of young people who don't service the clients because a) it's their break time or b) the request by the customer is something they don't want to do or c) it was slightly outside the normal course of business.
There are examples all around of young people who are making a difference - just a few more of them who aren't. It's time for business owners, teachers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], parents, and other would-be “mentors” to stop bailing out our young people. “Generation Y” needs to take responsibility for their actions and to be committed to the decisions they make. We have to help more of them learn to earn a living for themselves so they understand the commitment and responsibility the people who employ them take on when they hire them. We have to help them understand that when they learn these skills they actually can have the securities and freedoms they want when they want them. We have to help them learn how to earn so they can be part of the change we so desperately need in North America to maintain our independence and financial freedoms.

The young person in my story decided she wasn't getting the training she wanted despite being paid to review a very expensive CD program from one of the top professionals in her field. I'm not sure what she expected besides her regular paycheck but she certainly wasn't going to be the junior person in a start-up organization and have personal access to $1000-an-hour consultants. She decided to look for work while continuing to accept the payment for her training then gave 2 days' notice and expected to be paid the day she left - hmm.
In North America, our youth are still looking for job security and high pay,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with complete flexibility and lots of time off. They are still telling themselves they will save a lot of money so they can buy a house in 5 years' time and save for retirement after that. They are completely closed-minded to the idea that you can learn how to buy real estate and create income in other ways besides working at whatever job seems to offer the highest pay and most rewards at the time.
The bottom line is the entitlement mentality is becoming an epidemic. And that's a problem because this Generation Y, as its known,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], expects to have all the benefits the current generation has worked hard for without the commitment to make it happen. There are too few young leaders who take up the challenges of our society. Those that do step up need support, and unfortunately this means they will have to work alongside the growing number of youth who jump from job to job and pay for things on credit they don't have money for, and then look to parents or the government to bail them out when they can't make things work for themselves.
I guess I should be so lucky,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]; my brother owns a catering company and has shown up many times for work to find that the person who was supposed to start early on food preparation for that day just didn't show up because they were too tired from being out late the night before.

Along with this, the mother coos to her child and gives soothing attention. The mother then returns to whatever she may have been doing. The child, absorbing the response from mom, acquires a new, yet simple, understanding. Suddenly, the rattle is sent flying out of the crib and the crying inevitably ensues… awaiting the return of mom and her attention. As simple as this sounds, it is actually the beginning of a complex processing of stimulus. It unfolds, in brief, as stimulus - response- stimulus - thought - stimulus - response involving the processes of two separate individuals. Eventually, this process ceases to be effective and the parent and child must create a new, and initially,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], uncomfortable association.
This process can only begin when we fully accept that our anger, like all of our feelings and emotions, comes directly from us. We are the source and it is our perception of any given stimulus that creates the feelings we experience.

A part of our path to growing is letting go of denial, blame and judgmentalism. Years of such thought do not dissolve simply because we agree that they should. They do not disappear simply because we practice meditation. They do not end simply because we walk away from a situation. We need to practice releasing anger and can do this through observing it and questioning our investment in its outcome. For this purpose,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we can establish a simple mantra for anger and practice the direction it establishes for us.
Stop. Assess. Act rather than React.
Becoming aware that feelings of anger are a warning, we can stop. Stop our reactive mind. That part of the mind that is much like the mind of the animal. At this point, we now become able to assess. That is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we can examine the stimulus which has presented and to which we find ourselves reacting. Through this examination, we ask ourselves what judgments we may be making, what assumptions we may be forming, what blame we might be ascribing. We have an opportunity to ask ourselves what demands we are placing upon others or the world. We have a chance to examine whether we would truly be happier if our demands were met. Met without mutual understanding or acceptance. Uncompromisingly. We have a chance to examine whether we would truly be unhappy if our demands were not met. We have an opportunity to look at mutual solutions. Compromises. Alternatives. From examining our anger and assessing our investment in it, we have a greater chance to act upon the stimulus rather than react to it.
Realizing that we have these learned behaviors and understanding that they do not serve us well is the beginning of conscious communication with others and the world. It is here that we become able to practice our mantra and use our anger for its intended purpose. In viewing the above heading, notice how closely it resembles the mantra. We accept the stimulus. We consider all aspects of it.. especially our connection to and investment in it. We create a sense of respect for the stimulus and respond to it from that sense. Stop. Assess. Act rather than react.

If we look at how an animal processes stimulus in its environment, we will find that the animal responds from a place of automatic response. Reaction. This is learned behavior which is protective. It is representative of the lower forms of thinking regarding security, sensation, and control. In fact, because it is a learned behavior and has had considerable practice, there is little if any thinking actually occurring. This is often referred to as the fight or flight mechanism.
Examining the stimulus - response - thought process a bit further, we find that it is a typical relationship which develops, also from learned behavior, and lingers ineffectively in adulthood. It is most easily described as the impulsive mechanism. In early adolescence, a child sees a cookie, wants the cookie, and despite having been told not to have a cookie before lunch takes the cookie and eats it. Guiltily, he then concocts a story of how the cookie disappeared. Here, the impulsive thought was acted upon and then the guilt emerged. Retaining this dysfunctional process in adulthood, we all too often find ourselves having said or done something and immediately afterward asking ourselves, "Oh, God, why did I do that?" At this point, we either take ownership of our actions or we attempt to somehow justify them. Usually, this means that denial, blame, and judgmentalism are present. Either way, we typically find that the original stimulus and our reaction to it has turned into a new, and often, more uncomfortable stimulus.
When anger surfaces, it is a time for serious attention to our thinking process. Something has processed incorrectly and needs to be observed for clues. A lesson is being presented and we have an opportunity to grow.
